Job Introduction :

The Mayor's Office of Sustainability (MOS) is responsible for developing policies and programs to enhance the near-term and long-term sustainability of the City of New York, as outlined in the City's sustainability plan: One New York: The Plan for a Strong and Just City (OneNYC). MOS coordinates with all other City agencies to develop, implement, and track the progress of OneNYC and other issues of infrastructure and the environment which cut across multiple City agencies. In addition, MOS promotes the integration of sustainability goals and practices into the work of City agencies and the lives of New Yorkers.

Job Purpose :

The Deputy Director will report to the Director of MOS as a key member the MOS senior team. The individual will direct the GreeNYC program which is New York City's program dedicated to educating, engaging and mobilizing New Yorkers to take simple, but meaningful, steps to reduce their energy use, generate less waste and live more sustainable lifestyles. 

MOS is seeking a leader for our marketing program. Candidates must have strong skills and experience in strategy, marketing, fundraising and partnerships, research and analysis, communications and management.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

STRATEGY

  • Refine and implement New York City's short- and long-term strategy for engaging New Yorkers to reduce their carbon footprints and contributions to air pollution and tonnage of solid waste
  • Develop and implement strategy for creation, funding, design, production and distribution of all GreeNYC marketing materials
  • Develop and implement GreeNYC's partnerships and fundraising strategy

MARKETING & BRANDING

  • Maintain brand integrity for GreeNYC logo, the program's graphic "Birdie" and all collateral assets
  • Develop, design and execute strategic data-driven multi-media public service campaigns
  • Negotiate all media buys including digital, radio, and out-of-home
  • Identify and secure city-owned marketing assets to complement traditional paid media
  • Identify, direct design, manage procurement and production of all GreeNYC promotional items

FUNDRAISING & PARTNERSHIPS

  • Identify potential corporate and philanthropic partners; create targeted proposals for their involvement in GreeNYC initiatives, execute pitches, negotiate agreement terms and manage all elements of partnerships
  • Identify opportunities and execute partnerships with City agencies to best couple the marketing expertise of the Mayor's Office and success of the GreeNYC brand with the varying assets of the City agencies to educate and empower New Yorkers to live more sustainably; agencies include (but are not limited to) DSNY, Parks Dept., DCAS, DOE, DEP and DOT

RESEARCH & ANALYSIS

  • Develop and apply monitoring and evaluation framework for all GreeNYC campaigns; this includes measuring the environmental impact of GreeNYC campaigns
  • Initiate, direct and manage all research to identify target audiences, behavior change targets, messaging, media and measurement strategies

COMMUNICATIONS

  • Maintain, refine and implement GreeNYC's communications strategy
  • Work with External Affairs team to secure earned media
  • Direct strategy for mascot appearances, tabling, speaking and display at events
  • Develop event strategy and direct production

MANAGEMENT

  • Deputy Director will have one full-time direct report to manage as well as up to 3 part-time staff
  • Manage procurement all vendors and consultants
  • Direct and manage the work of all contractors across graphic design, production, copywriting, strategic development, public relations and web development

Required Qualifications or Skills :

  • 7-10 years' hands on experience in B2C marketing, advertising, public relations or other related fields
  • Data-driven approach to marketing; proven ability to track, analyze and report results; ability to use insights to enhance strategy
  • Entrepreneurial mindset - must be resourceful, adaptable and results driven
  • Experience developing and implementing comprehensive marketing and communications plans
  • Deep experience in media planning and buying across radio, all out-of-home and digital 
  • Knowledge of various printing and production processes
  • Experience developing, structuring and executing corporate partnerships; philanthropic fundraising experience a plus
  • Experience identifying data needs and directing research projects to fill them
  • Stellar written and in-person communications skills
  • Demonstrated success leading teams and collaborating across diverse groups
  • Knowledge of New York City a plus
  • An understanding of issues relating to climate change, the built environment, energy, urban planning , solid waste, transportation and economic development an advantage
